Activity of the Month

This month's meeting will occur at City Stables 13560 Skyline Blvd in the midst of Field Day activities on Saturday June 26 at 5PM. After the brief meeting we will have an optional potluck dinner. Come early or stay late and take a turn calling CQ or helping someone log the contacts. At the last meeting the membership approved the purchase of 20 ARRL Field Day 1999 participation pins. These will be awarded to those who actively participate for over one hour in at least one of the jobs. And anybody camping out overnight is invited to Jim K6JAT 's house after breakdown for a pool party.

(last month's activities are described in the ORCA member newsletter. To join ORCA .)

Controlled Burn Scheduled

If you happen to notice a plume of smoke coming from the Oakland-Berkeley Hill border area on June 22-23, it is because of a prescribed burn. Two Delta Conservation Camp crews from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection will be removing brush, cutting and trimming trees, and conducting prescribed burning in the park area near the Claremont Hotel, the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve. Some smoke may be visible beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Oakland Fire MRA drill

With KQ6JZ coordinating volunteers, we thank KE6STE, W6UAB, KB6MYV, W6THD, KE6TYY, KE6HCD for their participation on Saturday June 12, and KE6TYY, KB6MYV, KE6SAL, KF6EQA, WB6NER and KQ6JZ for their participation on Sunday June 13. A third event is scheduled for June 19 in order to cover the third firefighter shift.

The drill was a simulated fire in Tilden Park off of Wildcat Canyon Road. Oakland Fire, Berkeley Fire, Lawrence Berkeley Labs Fire, East Bay Park District Fire, Moraga/Orinda Fire, Contra Costa County Fire, and California Department of Forestry all responded. Moraga/Orinda brought their communications van with four amateur radio operators. A portable station was established an the Steam Trains. Initial contact was made on 146.88. A simplex net was established on 147.585 with net control at the Steam Trains. The most important lesson learned from this drill is that we need to pre-plan our response to a fire in the park and include representatives from neighboring jurisdiction since we may all be responding simultaneously as the fire departments do.

RACES Report

A Fire Patrol signup sheet was passed around at the June 5 meeting. Doug Wong showed several portable fire patrol paperwork boxes one of which will be kept at Station 25 and one at the EOC. They contained blank logs, maps (including the new Thomas Bros grid) and a clipboard.

Unfortunately not everybody present at the meeting walked away with a RACES ID card because it's a two stage process, so only those people who submitted call quick forms in the last few months were able to get theirs. To remedy this problem, we are enclosing blank call quick forms with this newsletter. Please fill one out and mail or deliver it to Doug Wong; Office of Emergency Services 505 14th St. 94612. You can then either make a weekday appointment at the OES to get your picture taken or wait till the August meeting where we will set up the ID card equipment again. We suggest you use the last 4 digits of your home phone for the call quick pin # since security is not really an issue. Also, write your pin next to your signature on your badge.
