Activity of the Month

There has been some confusion over what happened to ARES/RACES when ORCA was formed. The fact is that all ORCA activities are open to the public. We want you to participate in our activities whether or not you are able to join the club. This is because almost every amateur radio activity is applicable to emergency communications. And the next few months will have some events you won't want to miss.

The decision to go quarterly on the ARES/RACES news may have been a mistake, since you need to know what's going on with emergency preparedness each month. So, everybody gets a monthly newsletter again. But to keep us from going bankrupt, only paid members will get the premium version, with expanded coverage of non ARES/RACES topics.

This month we meet at the Downtown Fire Station 1. Talk-in will be on 146.88- for arriving in the parking lot before 9AM sharp. We will divide attendees into groups to tour the brand new EOC, to inspect the RACES radio room, and to have IDs made with Doug Wong.

(last month's activities are described in the ORCA member newsletter. To join ORCA .)

Oakland Fire MRA drill

Oakland Fire is conducting a Mutual Response Area drill with surrounding fire departments on June 12 and 13th. Details are to be determined, but interested operators able to participate either or both days from about 08:00-11:00 should contact Chris Burgardt, KQ6JZ : 654-5971 kq6jz@qsl.net Chris has been asked to identify a group of about 6 amateur operators who would participate in this drill. There will probably be a fixed location for net control (like Fire Dispatch), but the other operators will probably be stationed on fire engines. The intention is to try to establish "best practices" for amateur operations during wildland fire fighting and to better simulate the initial response we can expect in the first hours of a fire.

RACES Report

A proposal to have radio operators shadow city officials during the Great Green Sweep was considered. Doug Wong is working on arrrangements for the EOC tour and ID cards with the photo and name on the front. Chief Simon is the new head of the Oakland Fire Services. The EOC is a couple of months behind completion. Occupancy is now expected end of August. Mike W6UAB and Jim K6JAT participated in the City's Y2K tabletop exercise. Possible activity for our group on Friday, Dec. 31 is to monitor New Year's Eve occuring around the world on HF and broadcast shortwave, culminating with a net at midnight. To prepare for this, over the next six months we will need to moblilze our existing volunteers, install gear into the new EOC, contact and train exisiting Oakland hams on how to work effectively with the city through the EOC, and attract unlicensed interested people to no-code tech classes. Adele KE6HKY offered to construct a phone tree of the current ORCA and RACES membership. The Y2K Faire last month generated a small list of new interested people.
