The next meeting will be on Saturday, April 3, 1999 at 9:00 AM
at Leona Lodge 4444 Mountain Blvd. off Redwood Road/Carson
St.
Our April 3 meeting will feature Bob Uhrhammer WB6VEX, researcher at the UC Berkeley Seismological Labs. He will discuss earthquakes, seismic instrumentation and the Hayward Fault.
In January, Jim K6JAT and David WB6NER, met with Doug Wong, to review the continuing roles and functions of Oakland RACES for Fire and Police communications backup, support of damage assessment, testing of call quick, mutual response and training programs, maintenance of the ECHO system and deployment of antennas to shelter sites, and installation of ham equipment for the City's new 911 center and new EOC. Henry Renteria, OES Manager, joined the discussion and disclosed his priority items. The City will conduct a table-top disaster exercise in April, 1999 focusing on Y2K issues. A City Employee/Citizen Education Plan, the EOC Grand Opening in May/June, and gearing up for Summer Hill Patrols.
In February, call quick forms were distributed and filled out. All forms filled out in previous years are void. Plans for new RACES id's with longer expiration dates were discussed.
An updated budget for EOC equipment will be resubmitted, along with a budget for this year's upgrades and police communications. The spare antennas are now being considered for the 6 police substations and 18 shelter sites, 12 of which are at schools. The Red Cross Mason's conference room is being considered for a new meeting site to make the location more accessible.
We miss you too and we want you back! The Oakland Radio Communication Association now distributes its monthly, expanded newsletter only to paid members. Remember, it's your dues that pays the production and postage. We will continue to send you this quarterly ARES / RACES for as long as we can afford to, but if you believe there is more to ham radio than emergency service, this club is what you're looking for. We've got shorter business meetings and a different activity each month. There's a members-only section of the website: www.qsl.net/orca/ So, please fill out, clip out and return the section below. If you renew in April, we will send you the back issues you missed.
Yes, I want to be a member of ORCA in 1999!
