Minutes of the April 5, 1997 Meeting
Special Announcement: The June 7th meeting will be held at the Kaiser administrative offices, 1950 Franklin St, 2nd floor conference room F. The July 12th meeting is tentatively scheduled at Summit Hospital.
Jim, N6OIK attended a meeting at the OES on April 3. The following topics were addressed. The April 12 CORE drill would be a medical training. On that day, our group experimented with filling the dead spots on the city's 800 MHz system with ham radio. The OES has reserved the City Stables site once again for our Field Day. ID cards are delayed due to a problem with the PO for the machine. The New EOC is at 100% drawings and is 6 months behind schedule. The remainder Measure I equipment purchase list is up for review to update the choices, as some of the models specified are no longer manufactured. The April 30 drill will exercise the EOC computer system.
The acronym search continues with a new suggestion: OPERA: Oakland Piedmont Emeryville Radio Amateurs.
The CORE drill plan for April 12 was to begin a resource net at 9 AM, with dispatching to a staging area by 10 AM. From there 3-4 teams would be dispatched to a list of sites that the city would give us. A mobile rig set up to cross band repeat might be employed. Someone suggested that the group do an inventory of which members have radios capable of cross band repeat.
Masts are up and holes drilled for stations 18 and 24. Station 18 is scheduled for installation after the May meeting.
The Red Cross radios will be boxed up before the Red Cross moves. There was concern that without a plan to build a new radio room, the equipment will be forgotten. The new Red Cross location at 9th & Broadway is a historical building and a poor radio location, so it is unlikely masts will be erected.
Training: The no-code tech class has ended. Thanks to VE's Brian, W6LL , Art, W6THD , and Terry,NM6Z for overseeing the tests, where 7 participants passed and 2 have CSCE's for the Novice. The power connector party will be rescheduled. Newsletter editor apologizes for the confusion. The Northern California Emergency Response Institute conference is on May 17-18, 1997 in Sacramento. To register by mail send a check for $20 with your name and address to: ERI '97 P.O. Box 301 Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
Operations: The search for a permanent meeting site continues, as we look for one with ample free parking. David, WB6NER has reserved the Kaiser administrative offices 2nd floor conference room F for the June meeting. 1950 Franklin St is between 19th and 20th St. A public parking lot or bicycle mobile are alternatives to meters. Enter near the pedestrian overpass and sign in at security. The July meeting will be held on the 2nd Saturday, due to the July 4th holiday. Tentative arrangements are being made for a meeting room in Summit Hospital. Details of its exact location will be announced.
M.S. Walkathon: Chris, KQ6JZ reports that bicycle mobile was a success. A list of participants will appear in the next issue.
Baker to Vegas: Team Fremont came in first in their category and 28th overall. ALCO had lots of penalties, though no fault of ham radio. The ALCO follow van broke down. Last minute antenna problems left Fremont Shuttle 3 with only handheld communications.
Bay to Breakers: The Red Cross has an e-mail sign up for the San Francisco footrace on Sunday May 18. Please send your name, call sign, address, telephone number and your e-mail address to: hjsundal@usa.redcross.org
Field Day: Brian, W6LL offered his call for the event so that we will have full band privileges. Remember, even if you do not have HF privileges or a license, you can operate the W6LL station, with Brian around as control op. Higher pitched voices from kids and women actually attract pileups. The members at the meeting approved a non-returnable budget for food. The City Stables site is practically in Jim, N6OIK 's back yard and has plenty of room for camping out.
Web sightings: For a limited time (until May 12) the FCC is allowing public access to their database on the internet at http://gullfoss.fcc.gov/beta.htm. Those of you who took the April 21 VE test can search the database for your new call sign. Also, daily FCC licensing activities are posted at http://www.lantz.com/cbs/ and at http://www.qrz.com/
Band Threat: The little LEO companies are still targeting 146-148MHz, however they were not able to advance their position at an April 7-11 committee meeting.
YLRL: Founder Ethel Smith, K4LMB became a silent key this year just before her 80th birthday.
Almost upgraded: Congratulations to Cherie, W6BBK for passing the 13 wpm code test. Many amateurs find it easier to concentrate on either the code or the written to ensure success.
