<Announcements / Calendar>

<Races Report>

Jim, N6OIK met with Henry Rentiera of the Oakland Office of Emergency Services. Deborah Reisman, KE6MQV is still on maternity leave. Current RACES ID cards are expiring this year. A new RACES ID card will be designed that will also be recognized by the Police Dept. County RACES (now called the Alameda County Sheriff's Communications Team) has a professional looking ID card.

CORE neighborhoods will be conducting a drill on Saturday, April 12. An official policy on communications between Oakland CORE groups and Oakland RACES has been developed: It will be recommended that CORE groups use CB and Family Radio HTs for communications within their neighborhood. To talk to the city they will be instructed to go to the nearest fire station and have an amateur radio operator there pass the traffic to an appropriate department.

<AEC Reports>

Training: Another 8 week no-code Tech class is being held starting Monday, March 3rd from 7-9PM at 250 Fallon Street. Cost, including text is $30. An ICS training seminar occurred last month in Emeryville. Interest is still high to arrange a group CPR class. Thanks to Jim, KB6MYV for being guest speaker last month and presenting the Baker to Vegas video. The Northern California Emergency Reponse Institute is conducting an emergency communications training conference on May 17-18, 1997 in Sacramento. Information and registration forms for the $20 conference is at their web site: http://www.garlic.com/oes/eri/eri97.htm

Operations: Several signup sheets were handed out for those interested in being on a bicycle mobile team, and doing communications for the MS Walkathon. The Red Cross building is in the process of being sold. We are looking into alternate meeting sites, such as the parks and rec's Sequoia Lodge or Woodminster. There is some concern about what to do with all the radio equipment we have installed in the building. Thanks to Mark Keiser, N4OGL for donating this month's door prize, a Cisco suction mount note pad for the car.

Liaison: The Oakland ATV group is looking for someone to contine the organizing efforts that silent key KD6CTG had started. Once a good antenna location can be secured for the ATV repeater, the fun begins.

Administration: Adele, KE6HKY has taken over the mailing label production. Treasurer Bob, KE6IUE promises to come to the March meeting. If you haven't paid your 1997 dues by then, you may get an encouraging call from Adele. You can mail in your dues to the address listed in the box on page 3. Welcome new members and participants: Bill, WB6UVO , Andy, WD6CJK and Dave, KF6EQA. Congratulations to Brian, W6LL , formerly KJ6LL.

<Fire Station Radios>

Station 24 had a grand opening cornerstone dedication on Friday Jan 24. Masts has been installed at both stations 18 and 24. A signup sheet for adopt-a-station was passed out. The idea is to assign yourself to a station and test the radios there on a regular basis. Stations 3, 19, 26, and 27 still need assignment. A reminder that the official protocol for making an appointment is to call dispatch at 444-3322 and have them transfer you to the station phone number, 238-40##, rather than dialing the station directly.

<Band Threat>

A renewed little LEO industry threat to 2 meters, 220 MHz and 70 cm has occurred at the FCC Informal Working Group (IWG) 2A Feb 13 meeting. The ARRL and AMSAT submitted a statement of opposition and are asking your written support. Send a brief e-mail message by March 4 to wrc97@fcc.gov Subject line: "Reference No. ISP-96-005 IWG-2A." Message should, at least, say "I support the ARRL/AMSAT opposition, as stated in IWG-2A/108(Rev. 1), to the NVNG MSS flexible allocation proposal." Additional information is on our web site at http:ousd.k12.ca.us/~mpompa/ares/ and at the ARRL website at http://www.arrl.org/announce/iwg/ As always, underlined URLs can be linked from the newsletter pages on our web site.
