<Announcements / Calendar>

Members at the December meeting brainstormed on possible goals for the coming year. Brian, KJ6LL recorded the suggestions. The activities were divided into five categories:

Calendar: SETs; National Night Out; Field Trips; Guest Speakers; Monthly Events; Festival at the Lake; Hospital Net/Drill; EBMUD; Meeting Places.

Training: Documentation; Drills/SET; Fire Patrol; ICS/SIMS; Search & Rescue; Damage Assessment; First Aid/CPR; CORE manual; Net Control Training; Quarterly Drills; License upgrading; Radio Operation Elmers.

Operations: Agencies served; Oakland City/CORE; Red Cross.

Liaison: Piedmont, BART, AC Transit; County Hospital; community services; public relations.

Equipment: hand helds; batteries/supplies; "Go pack" day; Fire stations; ID Cards.

<Fire Drill>

Several members spoke about their experiences at the SET with the Fire Dept. We discussed the need for better maps and familiarity with the exact location of staging areas. Station 19's Bush Bucket was described: a 1970's Dodge Wagon chase vehicle.

<Fire Station Radios>

Radio installation for Station 26 was done in about 2 hours on Saturday, December 14. Willy, Chris, Roger, Ed, Brian and David punched it out. Chris Peeples came by late in the game to approve of our handi-work. Station 26 is a nice station in many respects. We are hoping Station 24 measures up to it too. As of this time there is no word as to when Station 24 may be scheduled. David is contacting Chief Parker about it. Ed will be looking into the status of Station 18, which is currently being retrofitted.

<Special Events>

Baker to Vegas: See the enclosed flyer for information about this April 11-14 event. Jim, KB6MYV is our contact person. The B2V web site is: http://semo.tio.net/~zonker/b2vhq.html

Net Control Operators

Over the years Oakland ARES has encouraged everyone to try their hand at being net control operators for a drill or the weekly net. Many first timers team up with an experienced operator who can get them going. Mark Violet has copies of the net control script, or you can get it at our web site at http://ousd.k12.ca.us/~mpompa/ares/oakscript.html. This list is by far not complete. Contact Mike, KD6PLN for corrections/omissions. We wish to thank the following:

FCC RF Exposure Regulations

In 1985, the Commission adopted rules for evaluating the environmental effects of RF electromagnetic fields produced by FCC-regulated transmitters. Excluded are amateur stations under 50 W PEP and mobile/portable stations with push-to-talk control, so most amateur stations already comply with the regulations. These rules were to take effect January 1, 1997, but have been extended to January 1, 1998 for amateur radio. The January 1997 QST has a table of Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) Limits on page 48. The Oakland ARES web site has additional references at the Pacific Division Update link.

<Tidbits>

Silent Key: Tim Ingham, KD6CTG passed away on December 6, 1996 due to cancer. More than 11 years ago, doctors gave him only 4 years to live. Besides being ARES AEC Liaison and selecting the group's jackets, Tim's hobbies were photography and cabinetry. He worked as a San Leandro pollution control inspector. He will be sorely missed.

Welcome: Newly licensed: Wayne, KF6HEW, Steve, KF6GYP and Alan, KF6GYI. New members/participants: AJ, KF6EUT, Russell, KF6BYF and Tony.

Web sightings: Mentioned at the last meeting, Sonoma Amateur Radio Club's Hank's Swap Shop is aired 7PM Tuesdays at 146.73 MHz: http://cds1.net/scra/

FCC Licence Renewal Reminders: Postcards are no longer being sent out by the FCC before your license expires. We are looking into the possibility of providing that service through our member database, still in the design stage.
