Attendance Sheet

<Announcements / Calendar>

<Races Report>

Construction of the new EOC adjacent to Fire Station 1 should begin within 3 months. Deborah, KE6MQV also reports that when ID card design is complete, the city will buy the ID maker. Deborah encouraged everyone to attend the Volunteer Recognition Day on Sunday, October 6 from 12 noon to 4:00 pm at the Joaquin Miller Community Center next to Woodminster. The Fire suppression district will have demonstrations, contests, CORE will be represented, there will be a dunking booth, games and a chili cook-off. Finally, Deborah will check if the city needs us for a Labor Day fire patrol.

<Measure I>

Radios and Antenna were installed in Station #12 (9th and Alice) after the meeting. David, WB6NER set the deadline for October 6th to complete all installations, planning for media coverage at Station #24.

<Special Events>

Emeryville Centennial: Emeryville is holding a Centennial celebration on September 14th. A sign-up sheet was passed around for participation from our group.

It was moved to advance training $600 for class costs to be recovered by student fees. $30.00 class fees include a manual, reproduction costs and refreshments. Fliers are available from Mike, KD6PLN.

National Night Out: Chris, KE6MQW provided a sign up sheet and script for the August 6th event. Mark, N6RCG agreed to operate the net. Chris also advised the press. It was noted that our group would be the first ham radio group to participate in this event.

ICS Training: Ed, KE6WPG volunteered to teach a 4 hour class explaining the Incident Command System, a management tool for coordination of emergency responses. More info to come on this.

Pacificon: The annual Pacificon conference will be held at the Concord Hilton on October 18-20. Early registration costs $3, if mailed in by October 14. Check the MDARC web site for more information: http://www.mdarc.org

Repeater Output>

During an emergency, when the repeater goes down, we ask that operators switch to simplex, transmitting on the output of the repeater. We'll go into details next month, including instructions on how to change the settings on a variety of radios. Mike, KD6PLN is compiling a list of radios, so tell him how to set your radio, if you know.

Newsline Needs Money>

The following is a repeat of a story aired last week dealing with the funding crisis currently facing Newsline. Here is our support Fund Administrator, Andy Jarema, N6TCQ:

"My job is to make sure that the bills get paid, and I'm here to tell you that I'm about to pull the plug. Pull the plug on over 19 years of responsible, up to the minute reporting of the news that matters to you, the radio amateur. There's been a fleet of caring amateurs, just like you, bringing you the news as it happens. As amateurs, we're committed to the concept of bringing you that news voluntarily, without monetary compensation.

Many of you have stepped up to the plate to help us, and we appreciate every effort. But the sad fact is that it takes an average of $1000 per month to keep Newsline on the air, with the online services, long distance to get the voices of the news when it happens, phone lines for the news feeds, postage services, and the like. For the past two years, voluntary contributions have averaged less than $500 per month. I don't have to ask you to do the math.

How many amateur radio clubs are there in the U.S., or in the many other countries where Newsline is heard, or even more where it is now read and heard on the Internet? If each club would contribute just $50 to $100 a year to keep Newsline on the air, you would achieve the goal of keeping the latest amateur radio news flowing to you.

As an MBA, and a CPA, and owning, building, then selling my own business, I don't like losing propositions. You've heard hams refer to "hitting the Big Switch". Newsline report number 1000, on October 11th will be our last newscast, unless you help now in a major way. We have no choice.

<Tidbits>

Web site of the month: Links to many Macintosh Amateur Radio files and programs may be found at: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/wd1v/

Stinkin' Badges: Jim KB6MYV collected $6.50 from members interested in purchasing personal, engraved ARES badges with call sign and first name.

S t r e t c h e r s : Brian, KJ6LL took orders for a $12.00, lightweight, durable emergency stretcher, which he purchased from Alco Iron & Metal in volume. These strechers make excellent, inexpensive cots. About a dozen are still available. Thanks to Nardeo, KE6MQX for helping transport the bulk purchase.

ARES Instant Trainer Emergency Manuals: Mark, N6RCG will call to find out when new ones will be ready for distribution to the membership.

New CORE Leader: Carrie Barnecut a licensed Ham from San Leandro, winner of a FEMA award is the new head of CORE and we can look forward to a visit from her in the near future.

New Member Fliers: After making a few minor corrections, a large supply of fliers have been printed. If you need a bunch to give out at a special event contact Mike, KD6PLN.

Cherie Morris, W6BBK is the first in our group to use the vanity call sign program to obtain her father's call. Formerly known as KE6MRB, Cherie's "new" call sign was first issued a year before she was born. Congratulations!

Vanity Call Signs: Brian, KJ6LL just received a stack of 610/V forms, if anybody else is interested in changing their call sign. He will bring them to the meeting.

QST Magazines: David, WB6NER will be bringing a box of old QSTs to give away at the September meeting.
