Announcements / Calendar

Races Report

Jim, N6OIK is working on a draft of the TIB with the OES. The TIB alerts the fire department staff on how to identify Amateur Radio Operators during emergencies. In order for you to participate, you must show photo ID, your ARES card and your FCC license.

On Thursday April 25, the City of Oakland will conduct a disaster drill. Our group will set up at 8:30 and finish by noon. All ham radio participants must be registered with Oakland RACES. We will need at least 30 volunteers for this morning-only exercise. There will be one main net and two tactical subnets. We plan to provide Amateur TV from the helicopter. A chart was presented by Jim, N6OIK Oakland RACES radio officer.

An organizational meeting for the disaster drill will be held on Saturday morning, April 20, time and location to be announced. There was talk of meeting for breakfast on drill day.

Measure I Radio Installation

Radios were installed into stations 25 and 16 after the March meeting. Stations 3 or 2 will be done after the April meeting and station 20 or 19 will be done after the April 20 drill meeting. If you signed up, bring tools with you.

Training Report

Brian, KJ6LL would like everyone to bring in their Go Packs for the June meeting. If you had to go to a shelter site for one day, are you prepared to grab a bag of stuff and go? See the February 96 Newsletter for a list of items you might include.

Liaison Report

Tim, KD6CTG reported that an EBMUD emergency net has started on the WB6NDJ repeater. Having two nets on the same frequency during a major emergency can cause much confusion, so VHF Repeaters, Inc. is granting our group "right of first refusal" for use of the repeater during emergencies and encouraging the EBMUD group to find a repeater that does not have another emergency net running on it.

Administration Report

Debbie, KE6MRK called a meeting of the Admin group to update the design of the membership database. Over the next few weeks, Jim, KB6MYV will implement the changes as a relational database, which will include additional phone # fields, e-mail fields, hours volunteered, nearest fire station and shelter for each member. Also attending were Bob, KE6IUE and Mike, KD6PLN .

Web Site

The Oakland Web pages have moved to: http://www.pdarrl.org/ebsec/oak.html . The Pacific Division web page is now: http://www.pdarrl.org/ . There will soon be directories available for FTP at that site.

Tidbits

Mike, KD6PLN is looking for someone to help out once a month the weekend before each meeting to fold and stamp the newsletters.

For Sale: A great no-frills first-time radio. The 2 Meter Kenwood TH21AT with extra battery, car adapter, wall charger, leather case. This radio has PL but no memories. $95. Call Brian, KJ6LL at 658-0625.

Update your e-amil address books. Newsletter editor Mike, KD6PLN has moved to mpompa@ousd.k12.ca.us

Please direct address changes to the roster person. This job is being transferred from David, WB6NER to Jim, KB6MYV.

More than half of the Oakland Public Schools are now wired for the internet. Many are now waiting for hubs and ethernet cards to complete the picture. Another net day will be scheduled for the fall.

Late Breaking Announcement: Hams needed on Sun April 14, 8:30-2 for MS Walkathon in Alameda. Call Chris, KE6SSW 654-5971
